Subaru, the automobile manufacturing division of Japanese transportation conglomerate Fuji Heavy Industries Co., Ltd, is best known for their use of boxer engines in their vehicles along with standard AWD. Over the years, Subaru has built up its reputation for high quality, reliable vehicles that don’t sacrifice performance for daily practicality. Introduced in the United States in 1996, the first Subaru Legacy Outback was marketed as ‘The World’s First Sport Utility Wagon’. The Legacy station wagon featured all wheel drive, body-cladding, off-road tires and slightly higher ground clearance. A crossover sport-utility vehicle, the Subaru Outback was based on the Legacy/Liberty station wagon. The Outback was created in response to the truck-based SUV craze that had begun to reach fevered pitch with customers. Subaru station wagons, even those equipped with all wheel drive, where being forsaken in lieu of the popular new SUV’s.The popularity of the Outback was helped in part by ads featuring Australian ‘Crocodile Dundee’ star Paul Hogan using the Outback in scenes were it competed again leading SUV’s, most notably the Ford Explorer. Largely visual changes were made to the existing Legacy extended roof Touring Wagon platform to suggest a more adventurous, rugged persona. In Japan the Outback was named the Legacy Grand Wagon before being renamed the Lancaster in 1997, and then again in 2005 as the Outback. An all-wheel-drive Outback was introduced to the US market in 1995 by Subaru as a 1996 model. In Australia, the model has been known simply as ‘the Outback’. Alongside the Subaru Legacy and Subaru Tribeca models, the US Outback is manufactured at the Subaru of Indiana Automotive plant in Lafayette, Indiana. In 1998, the Outback Sport, which was based on the Subaru Impreza 5-door hatchback was introduced. Olivier Boulay was hired by Subaru on a short-term basis to design the exterior of the Subaru Outback. In 1996, it became a separately-marketed line in the United States. It was at this time that the vehicle received Outback-specific changes that included unique bumpers, taller tires with more pronounced treat, slightly higher ground clearance, and tweed-like seats and door panel inserts. Only available with the DOHC 2.5 liter engine, the JDM Grand Wagon and Lancaster received a 10 hp improvement in 1998. On a select few Outback sedans and wagons, non-functional hood scoops were found, non-functional because Subaru did not install the turbo into any Outback vehicles.To simplify the powertrain implementation of all wheel drive, and because of the natural smoothness of the engine design, Subaru chose to use the boxer engine in the Outback. Due to the fact that the engine sits inline, or longitudinal, with the transmission, instead of being transverse, the body roll of the Outback is minimized. Instead of being offset, the weight of the engine and transmission are balanced, which causes the weight of the engine and transmission to be unbalanced in the engine bay in other vehicles. Because the engine sits low in the engine bay and close to the ground, the Boxer engine affords a low center of gravity, in comparison to other vehicles. This also makes the vehicles more stable in moderate to high speed maneuvers. While other manufacturers attempt to balance the offset weight by making their powertrains weight evenly distributed, this only results in making the powertrain heavier than the Subaru layout. The Subaru’s power train is manufactured from lightweight aluminum. Providing perfect vibration mitigation due to the fact that the movement of each piston is exactly countered by the corresponding piston in the opposing cylinder bank, the boxer design eliminated the need for a harmonic balancer attached to the front of the engine at the crankshaft. With this type of powertrain layout, torque steer is also reduced. Having the front driveshafts being of equal weight and length and extending from the transmission to the front wheels at almost perpendicular from the transmission achieves this feat. All past and current USA Subaru’s can be easily recognized by their trim levels and the color of the outside door panels. While base trim levels can always be identified by their black plastic door handles, uplevel models have painted door handles directly matching the exterior color.Sold in New England in 1999, the Outback Sport Utility Sedan was featured with a limited production test run. The SUS was introduced nationwide for the following year due to its success. The Outback became its own model in 2000, and along with receiving a 4-door sedan into its lineup, the Outback also received an available horizontal six-cylinder engine. Titled the ‘Lancaster’ in Japan for the second generation, the six-cylinder was also renamed the ‘Lancaster 6′.The second generation six-cylinder was featured with Subaru’s VDC (Vehicle Dynamics Control) system, which integrated stability control with traction control. The VDC system was joined to an all new AWD system which split the power 45/55 front-to-rear in normal conditions. The system cuts power to the spinning wheel when a spin is detected, and reroutes power to those that aren’t. Depending on transmission choice, other models retained the typical AWD layouts that have been seen in previous generation Outback models. Relying on limited slip differentials to redirect power front to rear, rear to front and from one rear wheel to the other, manual models came with the mechanical ‘Continuous AWD’ system, which was normally 50/50 front/rear. Automatic models featured an electronically-controlled AWD system that was 90/10 front/rear, that redirected differing amount of power to the rear wheels continuously depending on hard the accelerator pedal was pressed. Differing front the previous 4-cylinder model in that it became an SOHC design, the Outback came standard with a 165 horsepower 4-cylinder boxer engine. Maximum torque was available at a lower rpm. The only vehicles ever factory-equipped with McIntosh stereo equipment, the highest trim level of the Outback received a 200 W McIntosh stereo system as standard equipment from 2001 to 2003. Available options also included an in-dash 6-disc CD changer and dual moonroofs. Rather than resembling U.S. models, Australian Outback models were designed closer to the Japanese models. The evidence lies primarily in the placement of the headlights, rear taillights, front and rear bumpers, the side indicators on front quarter panels, and higher placing of the ‘Outback badging’ on the front door bodywork, rather than being placed on the plastic cladding.Australian models were released in an early style with all-in-one headlights, gold colored cladding, a light gray cloth internally, light brown wood textured dashboard, and a plain instrument cluster. Available as an aftermarket option was a nudge bar, which was a smaller style of bulbar or roobar. From 2002 through 2004 the style was updated to feature silver cladding, a new updated range of paint color options, a dark gray/black cloth internally, multi-unit headlights, dark gray plastics, and a very dark brown faint wood texture, along with metal trims on the dials of the instrument cluster. Available models included the base ‘Outback’, the ‘Outback H6′ which now included the 6 cylinder engine with VDC, and the ‘Outback Limited’ which featured a new sunroof along with cloth/leather seats. The Outback H6 was now available in a single metallic pearl off-white color, rather than the usual color either gold or silver cladding, and also featured slightly different 16′ wheels. Available only in automatic, the size of the 6- cylinder engine was most likely the reason, due to not enough space to fit the manual box and associated dual range mechanicals. Introducing the fourth-generation Legacy at the 60th Frankfurt Auto Show in 2003, the Outback name was now being used worldwide with the launch of the second-generation Outback wagon. Introduced at the 2004 Chicago Auto Show were models equipped with a 3.0 L H6. Based on the most recent Impreza, the Impreza-based Outback Sport is marketed on Subaru’s U.S. website as a trim of the Impreza. Forester 2.5X models receive a new 2.5-liter flat four with new bore and stroke dimensions and a slightly longer stroke. Displacement increases from 2,457 cc t0 2,498 cc. Torque increases by 4 lb-ft. to 174 lb-ft. and now peaks at 4,100 rpm (previously 4,400 rpm). Most importantly, fuel economy is up all around to 21 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway for both manual and automatic transmissions. That’s a 1 mpg improvement for automatics both in the city and on the highway, while manuals see a 1 mpg improvement in city driving only.

Detail changesThe automaker has also added another trim level to the Forester lineup: 2.5X Touring. It adds to the previously range-topping (for naturally aspirated models) 2.5X Limited HID headlamps, a backup camera integrated into an upgraded audio system, automatic climate control, silver finished roof rails, electroluminescent gauges and turn signals integrated into the side mirrors.

It’s that time of year again when kids load their backpacks with rented textbooks, school-sanctioned laptops and iPhones crammed with podcasts of English Lit lectures. When your kid heads back to school, chances are they’ll need a way to get there.

While it would be great if every school system still ran bright yellow buses to every corner of the district and all colleges were near public transit, that’s not always the case. That’s why Kelley Blue Book released its yearly list of the best cars for going back to school.

Not surprisingly, their top five are pretty predictable. The 2006 Honda Civic tops the list, followed by the 2011 Ford Fiesta, 2010 Mazda3, 2008 Pontiac Vibe and 2010 Honda Fit. The slightly odder “Saabaru” 9-2X, the 2010 Kia Soul, 2006 Ford Crown Vic (huh?), 2008 Suzuki SX4 hatchback and the new Chevrolet Cruze round out the lineup.

It’s a nice list — the Crown Vic is the only Grandma hand-me-down — but most of the cars are compacts, and the newer ones are pretty pricey for the average family, especially after that first tuition bill arrives. That’s why we compiled our own list. If it proves that none of us are fit to be parents, so be it — but we assure you that we’d make some pretty fun uncles.

OK, stay with us on this one, as it follows the same logic that we tried on our parents some years ago. Despite the lack of front airbags, side airbags and even a roof, this might be the safest car on the road. Here’s why.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the risk of a fatal car crash increases in proportion to the number of young people in the car. The TR7 only has two seats, ensuring that Junior will be able to ride straight home before curfew more safely than if he were behind the wheel of a Grand Caravan decked out with as many teenage passengers as airbags.
Not convinced? Well, consider that NHTSA also reports the deadliest time for teen drivers is between the hours of 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. That’s after dark and before sunrise. With the double-whammy of pop-up lights and a Lucas electrical system from the Prince of Darkness himself, you can be sure that your kid’s TR7 won’t be leaving the driveway unless the sun is shining.

Volkswagen New Beetle 1998–2011

In the same vein as the TR7, this one is all about statistics. According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, two out of three crashes involving teen drivers occur when a male is behind the wheel. It only makes sense, then, that you’d want to give your kid the ride Tom and Ray over at Car Talk consider the ultimate chick car. Throw some petunias in the dashboard vase and Sarah McLachlan on the CD player, and you’ll be sure your son or daughter is safe and sound, free from the risk-taking impulses that come from years of playing GTA 4.

Subaru Outback 1998–2004

Headed to a small New England liberal arts college where the most competitive sport is ultimate Frisbee? You’ll need a Subaru Outback. Sure, the car carries some stereotypes, but whether you use the giant trunk to haul your gear to drum circles or cover over the faded Howard Dean sticker with a College Republicans decal, you’ll be thankful for the all-wheel drive when you’re headed home for winter break in blizzard conditions.

Volvo 240, 740 and 940 1974–1995

The clear winner in the sub-$2,000 category, the stalwart Swedes have been mainstays on college campuses for good reason: Their longevity means they’re the automotive equivalent of Abe Vigoda. While repairs can be pricey, and all but the newest 940s are older than the teenager behind the wheel, they’re still the safest, most reliable choice for families on a budget. Bonus: You’ll probably be able to find one with a still-valid campus parking permit. Extra credit if it’s for the faculty lot.

We agree with Kelley Blue Book on this one. While the latest model’s been criticized for a front end that resembles a Cheshire Cat’s grin, any kid with keys to this car would have a similar smile on his or her face. Great gas mileage, sporty handling and safety features keep students and parents happy, while an optional stick shift might teach a nearly lost art to a generation raised on slush boxes.Pontiac Vibe 2003–2010

Again, another Blue Book pick that we can get behind, though we prefer the redesigned 2009 model. The Vibe is a versatile hatch that was made in Fremont, California, alongside its sibling, the Toyota Matrix, in the famed Toyota-GM NUMMI plant. It wears a discontinued badge, but the Pontiac is nearly identical to the Toyota, and Kelley prices a used Vibe at nearly $2,000 less than a similarly equipped Matrix.Buick LaCrosse 2005–present

Buick put a lot of effort into shedding their oldster image with the new LaCrosse, so why do we recommend the previous model? Simple: if you buy a used car from an elderly person, chances are it’s been waxed more times than it’s been driven on the highway. Plus, it boasts near-Lexus luxury, quality and handling with a comparatively low resale value. Things have been a wee bit tense between me and Subaru since I posted my test drive of the 2010 Legacy. Subaru made a lot of changes to the Legacy, and I wasn’t a big fan — although I would seem to be in the minority, as Subaru says the new, larger Legacy is selling strongly. (Hey, I didn’t say it was a bad car, I just liked the old one better.)

So when I got an invitation to drive the updated 2011 Impreza WRX and STI, I had a feeling things could potentially get a bit more awkward. Now, I’m a huge, huge fan of the current-gen WRX — it made my Best New Cars of 2008 list, and when I test drove it again in 2009 I was over the moon. Heck, I’m even a huge fan of the base-model Impreza 2.5i — with standard all-wheel-drive and electronic stability control, I think it’s one of the safest cars on the road.

Sale of FIA Group N Rally Base Vehicle
Subaru Tecnica International (STI) has decided on the standard specification of the FIA (International Automobile Federation)
Group N car with the new Impreza WRX STI, sold by FHI as a base vehicle. They will be sold at specially agreed motorsport bases (STI base teams) in Europe, South Africa, etc. for use as rally base cars.

The new IMPREZA WRX STI (vehicle type: Subaru CBA-GRB) that went on sale on October 24th for the domestic market is a 5 door car with the combination of Subaru’s unique symmetrical AWD chassis layout and high power horizontally-opposed 2 liter turbo engine. They have continued development for the customer-prepared Group N rally cars to be presented in 2008 or after, exchanging information with the FHI production car development team, to improve elements and the competitiveness necessary for rallying. As soon as the base vehicles go on sale, the FIA VO parts for Group N and the STI sport parts for increased competitiveness will be released. FHI has decided that they will apply for FIA Group N status for the new IMPREZA WRX STI, and are aiming to get approval on January 1st 2008.

@call4myduty well shit stain you said most fuel efficient 4wd you never said petrol 4wd did you fuckin idiot, and even if the diesel does do 55mpg (wich i highly doubt) it is known to have shit performance, even a audi Q7 v12 tdi with 500bhp can do 25 mpg and that will rape a legacy. Anyways if you want to talk about petrol only then even the golf r with 270bhp can get around 30mpg and that is better then a 150bhp legacy petrol. So kiss my nuts

Wearing aggressive new body work—including new front and rear bumpers along with wider fenders and quarter panels—the exhilarating Subaru Impreza WRX has a base sticker price of $25,495 for both the four- and the five-door models. Other upgrades for the 2011 model year include an improved sound system that now features six speakers, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls and new alloy wheels wrapped in wider summer-performance tires. as hard as im tyring to like the new sti sedan i still think the old ones were far more better looking. well i guess aggressive would be a better word. but for an sti i expect it to look more aggressive than elegant due to its rallying history and all. does suburu remember that it used to be a rally car? anyway the new sti sedan seems not aggressive enough and also not elegant enough but i would pick it over the hatchback

I have to question the point of reviewing a car and not actually reviewing it, leaving the viewer to decide if it’s better or not simply by watching it do a slow corner on a road . Also, strangely enough, I can’t see the improvements in the car’s suspension, steering, brakes and performance by watching it bump around on a poorly surfaced ‘rally track’.

My car now has 3300 miles and my gas mileage has been great. The lowest for one tank was 27.9 and the highest was 34.1. the other day i checked the mileage on a 20 mile stretch of highway and got 36.4. Granted it was only for twenty miles but i was impressed. This is not a small car.

I have a Subaru Outback 2008, I am not sure if really like the outback 2010. But the car itself is amazing, I drove mine in ice, snow, and forest as off road and had no problems clearing the road with big holes due to the raised suspension. I okay with my 2.5 engine. Go subi.:)

@akabane1984 actually i was talking about 7-8psi but i would say even 11psi is safe for a N/A to turbo setup (more than id run but still safe), anything above that you need to lower compression, like i said those are rules that apply to any N/A to turbo car

In the mid-1990s, America’s desire for SUVs was growing at a rapid pace. To the brain trust at Subaru, it was fairly obvious that consumers liked the elevated seating and macho styling of these vehicles, but had little use for their bouncy rides and poor fuel economy. The company’s solution? The Subaru Outback, the “world’s first sport-utility wagon.”

Designed with the North American market in mind, the Subaru Outback provided many popular SUVs traits without the associated drawbacks. Subaru based it on its midsize Legacy platform and made sure the vehicle came standard with all-wheel drive, a raised suspension for better ground clearance, and special interior and exterior styling details.

At its debut, the Subaru Outback was pretty much the only vehicle of its type and was an instant hit with consumers. It did lose a bit of an edge as other automakers came up with similar crossover wagons and SUVs at the start of the new millennium, but Subaru has recently countered with its fourth-generation Outback, which is more like a crossover SUV than ever. New or used, the Outback is a strong contender for shoppers interested in a car that provides plenty of everyday versatility with the type of all-season capability needed for frosty climes.

Current Subaru Outback

Redesigned for 2010, the five-passenger Subaru Outback is a tall wagon available in a number of trim levels — 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Limited, 3.6R, 3.6R Premium and 3.6R Limited — distinguished by powertrain. The base engine is a 2.5-liter horizontally opposed boxer four-cylinder that makes 170 horsepower and comes with either a six-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Also available is 3.6-liter six-cylinder boxer engine good for 256 hp, with a five-speed conventional automatic as the only available transmission.

Even the base Outback comes with roof rails, full power accessories, cruise control, a tilt-telescoping steering column, a height-adjustable driver seat and a CD stereo with an auxiliary audio jack. Higher trims add niceties like alloy wheels, foglights, powered and heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control and a Harman Kardon sound system. There’s also an optional voice-activated navigation system that’s bundled with an iPod/USB input, Bluetooth and streaming Bluetooth audio, and a back-up camera.

More so than previous Outbacks, the new model is meant to appeal to more mainstream buyers by being larger on the inside. To this end, while bumper-to-bumper length has shrunk by almost 1 inch, the wheelbase has grown by nearly 3 inches, width by 2 inches and height by 4 inches, enlarging interior space considerably and putting the Outback on par with other midsize crossovers. With the rear seats folded, there are an impressive 71 cubic feet of cargo space available.

In reviews, we’ve commented favorably about the current Outback’s roomier interior. Performance with the base four-cylinder is unremarkable, however; if you want some zip, you’ll need to ante up for the 3.6-liter engine. We miss the previous Outback’s turbocharged boxer-4, a boon for owners living in mountainous areas. Handling is also unimpressive, as the Outback’s elevated ride height and soft suspension tuning do their best to obscure the vehicle’s sedan roots. Overall, the latest Outback is a solid choice for utility-minded families, but it’s not as enjoyable to drive as previous models.

Used Subaru Outback Models

The third-generation Outback was produced from 2005-’09. There were several trim levels: base 2.5i, 2.5i Special Edition, 2.5i Limited, 2.5 XT Limited, 3.0 R, 3.0R Limited and 3.0R L.L. Bean Edition.

For power, 2.5i trim levels had a 2.5-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine that made 170 hp. The XT level upgraded to a 2.5-liter turbocharged engine with 243 hp. The 3.0 R model came with a 3.0-liter horizontally opposed six-cylinder (H6) good for 245 hp. All-wheel drive was standard across the board.

Models with either of the 2.5-liter engines could be equipped with a five-speed manual transmission. A four-speed automatic was available on 2.5i models, while 2.5 XT models got an optional five-speed auto. The 2.5i Limited models were four-speed automatics only, and the H6 came only with the five-speed automatic.

If you’re shopping for a used model of this generation, there are a few items to note. An Outback sedan was offered from 2005-’07. Additionally, all Outbacks prior to the 2008 model year lacked a telescoping steering wheel and auxiliary audio jack. Horsepower figures were lowered for 2007 due to revised SAE standards, but actual performance was not affected. The luxurious L.L. Bean trim levels were discontinued after 2008, replaced by a single 3.0 R Limited model, and stability control also became standard.

In reviews, this third-generation Subaru Outback received praise for its standard all-wheel drive, long list of features, strong turbocharged engine, above-average build quality and balanced ride and handling dynamics. While it didn’t quite have the off-road capabilities of a true SUV, it could take on light-duty terrain without complaint. Negatives brought up in reviews typically centered on the vehicle’s smallish backseat and the sluggish response from the automatic transmissions.

The second-generation Subaru Outback (2000-’04) was also available as either a sedan or a wagon. In its first year, this model was available in base and Limited trims, and had a 165-hp, 2.5-liter engine. The following year, Subaru introduced the L.L. Bean Edition and the VDC trim levels. These featured the more powerful 212-hp six-cylinder engine.

Compared to the current car, the second-generation Outback is a bit smaller and not quite as refined or capable. Subaru made minor improvements to this generation during the years, but none are significant enough to make any particular model year stand out. In Edmunds.com road tests, reviewers liked its standard all-wheel drive and car-based comfort. Some felt that the four-cylinder models were underpowered, however, and that it was eclipsed by newer competition in its later years.

When the original Subaru Outback model debuted in 1995, it was little more than a trim package on the Legacy wagon. In 1996, the Outback (officially known as the Legacy Outback for this generation) gained its raised suspension, large foglights, SUV design cues and optional 155-hp 2.5-liter engine. Further improvements during successive years included the addition of a leather-lined Limited model, dual sunroofs and powertrain refinements. As the Outback was one of the first crossover wagons to be designed, consumers interested in this type of vehicle from the late 1990s will likely find it to be quite suitable, especially compared to SUVs from the same period.

I know I’m late by 10 months here, but after driving both, the Edge is nowhere near the SUV that the Subaru is. Subaru put its rally experience into all of their cars. The Ford Edge does not benefit from Ford’s (English) rally experience. I live in Colorado, where the roads are unforgiving. You don’t see a lot of Fords. Their AWD system is crap. You see Subaru’s vehicles all over the place. You should have spent the extra money (if you could have) and got the better SUV. You’re a moron.

Which vehicle has Subaru’s symmetrical all wheel drive and Subaru’s boxer engine? Which one has the Tribeca’s interior or anything else. I’m asking because I don’t know. Enlighten me. The Tribeca is a rebadged… what?

While it looks and performs differently than many other factory rack systems, the 2010 Subaru Outback roof rack still offers excellent configuring flexibility for all your transport needs.
